The fun side of storm chasing

June 5, 2009

This was our storm. We went north, then west toward the storm. It had a well defined wall cloud on it and when we approached, it had strong rotation. We positioned ourselves west of LaGrange near Bear Mountain and watched as the rotation tightened up and a needle tornado briefly touched down. The hail core was approaching, so we had to backtrack east a bit. That is when the tornado firmly planted down just behind us. We had to continue driving to a safe place as 2"+ hailstones started pounding us. We got back on 85 southbound and watched the rest of the life of the tornado. It had a beautiful white rope out stage. Road options forced us to drop farther south. It tried to produce another tornado, but the rotation was extremely weak in the funnel. We had a nice look at the structure of the storm. Later we shot some nice lightning before heading off to eat and reposition for the next day.
