The fun side of storm chasing

March 30, 2008

I chased with Rocky Rascovich and Mark McGowan. Today's target was not very clear. We ended up going a little west of Oklahoma City. It wasn't long before towers developed in SW Oklahoma and we continued west. We dropped south to Corn, OK and observed the first storm. It was fairly high based and didn't look very promising. We abandoned it for another better looking storm to it's SW. Near Rocky, OK we watched as a wall cloud tried to form. Soon, we started to get hail. It got up to about 2.5 inches and we dropped south to get out of it. The storm moved over us and we continued east to stay up with it. It had a stacked plates appearance for a little while and produced a few brief funnels. After dark, we were going to stay in Binger and let the hail core come over us when it wrapped up better and we decided to go a little SE to get a view if it produced a tornado. We did witness power flashes, but couldn’t confirm anything. It produced some great lighting before we got behind it and continued to Union City then back home since it was getting late and not easy to see any features.
